Pull-on adult diapers are adult diapers worn like underwear. This article explains their types, sizing and selection, how to put them on, and precautions when using incontinence insert pads.

What are pull-on adult diapers?

Pull-on adult diapers are disposable diapers that combine an absorbent core with a garment that holds it in place. Their main feature is simplicity: you put them on like underwear.

Types

Brief-style and boxer-style pull-on adult diapers, including white and colored designs

There are brief-style and boxer-style designs.

Brief-style adult diapers

This is a common shape for both women and men. Its streamlined cut is easy to pull on.

Colored brief-style adult diapers

Beige brief-style pull-on adult diaper

Products come in colors other than white, including pink, beige, gray and black.

Boxer-style adult diapers

This design has slightly longer legs. It extends onto the thighs to fit around the legs.

Diaper design has also been improving in recent years.

Absorbency

Comparison of thin and thick pull-on adult diapers

Products range from ultra-thin to thick designs. The retail examples discussed here include indicated absorbencies from 300 to 1,200 mL. Check the current package for each product’s absorbency. Higher absorbency can mean greater thickness, which may affect posture.

Adult sizes

A wide range of sizes is available, with some larger sizes sold online. A size that is too small can feel tight and be difficult to put on or remove. A size that is too large can shift and contribute to urine leaking outside the diaper. Choosing an appropriate size matters.

Size examples across different products: lower limits from 45 cm and upper limits up to 203 cm. Check each product’s own size range.

How to measure for size

For pull-on adult diapers, use the waist measurement and measuring point specified by the manufacturer or product package.

Choosing pull-on adult diapers

When a person can use the toilet safely and with confidence with assistance, pull-on adult diapers are the choice described here. They are easier to take off and put on at the toilet than tape-fastened adult diapers, which are less suited to this situation.

Pull-on adult diapers are used in a variety of situations. In recent years, people have used them not only in care settings but also to make everyday life more comfortable.

Tips for putting them on

Stretch from front to back to raise the leak guards

Pull up fully at both the front and back

Pull the diaper up fully so that the absorbent area fits closely against the genital area. A better fit can also make leg movement easier. Some older people have difficulty reaching behind their body, leaving the back of the diaper insufficiently pulled up. This can contribute to leaks. Pull-on adult diapers may also slip down over time, so check and pull them up regularly.

Precautions when adding an insert pad

Some diaper absorbency can go unused

An insert pad’s waterproof backing prevents urine from passing directly down through it, so the absorbent material beneath it in the pull-on adult diaper can go unused.

There are incontinence insert pads made specifically for pull-on adult diapers. These combinations are designed so that the pad fits inside.

Adding a pad increases bulk around the buttocks

In particular, combining a high-absorbency pull-on adult diaper with a pad layers absorbent materials and adds thickness. This may affect posture and other aspects of movement.

Pad-holding underwear has no absorbent core, making it a simpler combination.

Positioning the pad can be difficult

People who cannot reach behind their body or who have numbness in their fingertips may find it difficult to position an incontinence insert pad correctly.

When using an insert pad

Thin pull-on adult diapers are available. If combining a pull-on adult diaper with a pad, a thinner diaper is recommended to limit bulk.

What to check when buying

The number of diapers in a pack varies by manufacturer and size. Compare the price per diaper.
