When looking for larger pull-on adult diapers, check the waist measurement range as well as the size label, such as L, LL, 3L or 4L. This article selects larger sizes from six manufacturers’ home-use product ranges and compares their sizes and approximate void-count references.

Even products labeled L can have different size ranges. Do not choose by the upper limit alone: check for uncomfortable pressure or large gaps around the abdomen, buttocks and legs.

How to measure waist size

Measure the waist at the point specified by the manufacturer and compare it with the range printed on the product package. Check the fit around the legs and lower back when the diaper is worn.

The 4L size has a waist range of 130–180 cm and a manufacturer-stated absorbency reference of approximately 4 voids. A 3L size for waists of 110–140 cm is also available. The 4L product is listed on the Japanese official page; check availability with individual retailers.

In my experience, it is unusual to find 4L stocked in a store. Ask staff whether they can order it for you. Some stores occasionally stock 3L.

The LL size has a waist range of 90–125 cm and an absorbency reference of approximately 5 voids. It is intended for people who can stand or sit, with a design that considers ease of pulling it up and down and fit against the body. Lifree also offers other LL pull-on adult diapers with different absorbency references.

The L size has a waist range of 80–125 cm. Its manufacturer-stated absorbency reference is approximately 8 voids, and it is designed for longer use without a separate pad. Consider body fit and when a change is needed, rather than choosing only by the higher void-count reference.

The L–LL size has a waist range of 85–115 cm and an absorbency reference of approximately 5 voids. By comparison, Relief Easy Up-and-Down Thin Pull-on Adult Diapers with a 2-void reference in size L–LL have a waist range of 80–110 cm. The same L–LL label can cover different waist ranges in different products.

What to check when choosing a size

Measure the waist at the manufacturer’s specified point and compare it with the stated waist range. If choosing between sizes, check for gaps around the legs or lower back and for uncomfortable tightness when worn. Adding an incontinence insert pad to a pull-on adult diaper can also change the fit because of the pad’s thickness.

Many manufacturers calculate their void-count reference using 150 mL per void. The actual amount of urine and the interval between changes vary from person to person. Do not decide when to change a diaper by this count alone.

Summary

Among the featured home-use products from these six manufacturers, the upper waist limits range from 115 to 180 cm. When choosing a larger size, prioritize how it actually fits, rather than the upper-limit number alone.
