When choosing a mat to place around a portable toilet, consider shifting and trip hazards as well as protection against soiling. Waterproofing and water repellency work differently, and deodorizing and non-slip features vary by product. This article explains selection points and compares products from five manufacturers.

What are deodorizing and waterproof mats?

Urine may spill onto the floor when someone cannot reach the portable toilet in time. Floor-protection mats include waterproof products and products emphasizing water repellency, deodorizing or grip. To prevent seepage into the floor, check that the product is explicitly labeled waterproof.

Types of deodorizing and waterproof mats

Waterproof designs resist urine passing through to the underside. Water-repellent designs repel moisture at the surface, which is different from waterproofing. Deodorizing, non-slip features, washability and dimensions also vary.

Choosing a deodorizing and waterproof mat

Portable toilets vary in size, so deodorizing and waterproof mats also come in different sizes. Choose to match the toilet you use. Allow a little extra width on both sides. Place the rear legs of the toilet on the mat and choose enough length to extend a suitable distance in front.

Deodorizing and waterproof mats: Points to note

Even a thin mat can cause trips if its edges lift or its underside does not suit the flooring and slides. Before purchasing, check compatible flooring, whether edges may lift and the washing method.

I sometimes see households using newspaper or bath towels underneath portable toilets, but these can pose a fall risk. Dedicated mats cost a little more, but are available and worth using.
