Hiroshi Yagi was invited to speak at the 38th Higashiosaka Project ‘Let’s Talk About Difficult Things’ meeting on the theme ‘Diapers as assistive products that support independence.’

Let’s Talk About Irrelevant Topics” is a regional exchange event where medical and welfare professionals, as well as local residents, can discuss topics that are difficult to talk about in daily life and reflect on the future of life and society. This time, the theme is ” diapers.

In the lecture, I spoke about basic knowledge such as the types and selection of adult incontinence products, as well as the functions and characteristics of each product, and the considerations when selecting them according to individual physical conditions and living environments.

I also shared the perspective of considering diapers not merely as a response to incontinence, but as “welfare devices for supporting independence,” which support outings and social participation. If used appropriately, they can expand the choices in life, but the use of a diaper that does not fit the individual’s physical functions or living situation may limit activities.

We also addressed the lack of places where it is possible to change a diaper while outdoors, as well as the preparation of environments such as multi-functional toilets and universal sheets. We conveyed the importance of considering not only the selection and usage of diapers but also the lifestyle after using them and the outdoor environment.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the attendees of the Higashiosaka Project and to all who participated.
