Flat adult diapers, also called flat absorbent sheets, are flat, sheet-shaped diapers used with a diaper cover. Because they are non-breathable and have no standing leak guards, leakage and trapped moisture require attention. This article explains their features, uses and combinations to avoid.

Flat adult diapers

Regular flat absorbent sheet

These products are specifically designed for use with diaper covers. They are thin, flat rectangular sheets. They are non-breathable and have no standing leak guards.

Absorbency

A larger flat adult diaper does not necessarily have greater absorbency. Check the labeled capacity and choose one suited to the wearer’s urine volume.

Cross-section comparison of a flat absorbent sheet and an incontinence insert pad with standing leak guards

Flat adult diapers contain relatively little absorbent material for their size and have no standing leak guards, making side leakage more likely. When using a tape-fastened adult diaper, choose a more compact, higher-capacity incontinence insert pad rather than a flat sheet.

Size

Size comparison of a flat absorbent sheet and an incontinence insert pad

Comparing a flat adult diaper and an incontinence insert pad, both rated for 4 voids, the flat sheet is larger. Because it has no narrowed section, it is bulky around the hips and groin.

Combination (not recommended)

Flat adult diapers are used with diaper covers. This is not a recommended combination.

Flat adult diapers are non-breathable. Even with a breathable diaper cover, breathability cannot be maintained in the area covered by the flat diaper.

Uses for flat adult diapers

Catching water during perineal washing

Place a sheet underneath to catch water from washing or showering. It is also useful beneath the person when there is diarrhea, and can catch unexpected urination during a diaper change.

Precautions for flat adult diapers

Tape-fastened adult diaper combined with a flat absorbent sheet

Do not combine them with tape-fastened adult diapers or pull-on adult diapers. Their large size crushes the standing leak guards. Forcing one inside the guards creates wrinkles that can put stress on the skin.

Do not adapt flat adult diapers as extra leak protection. This can cause leakage, skin problems and restricted movement.

This shows the actual relative sizes. The tape-fastened adult diaper’s standing leak guards cannot function properly.

Absorbent sheets are sold at lower prices than flat adult diapers. They also come in a wider range of sizes, allowing you to choose for the intended use. Consider using them.

Summary

Using a flat adult diaper as an insert pad is not recommended. Using one to catch water during perineal washing is recommended.

Flat adult diapers are sometimes added to tape-fastened adult diapers as an attempt to prevent leaks. Instead, use an incontinence insert pad with absorbency suited to the urine volume, without adding a flat adult diaper.
